CNN-IBN

Ex NDTV man Rajdeep Sardesai has launched his new TV news channel which he claims as the news channel run by Journalists. The channel CNN-IBN started telecast from last saturday and to me looks packed with all the ingredients to make it to the top.Though the graphics look similar to CNN and some promos look similar to NDTV I think it is bound to have such effect .CNN looking to start a regional news channel in India found a suitable person in Rajdeep who was looking for someone to fund his dream channel. All the best CNN-IBN.Their website is also looking pretty exhaustive and hi tech. way to go.

Rang De basanti

A R Rehman rocks in his latest album Rang de Basanti starring Aamir khan,Siddharth(Boys fame),Madhavan,Soha ali khan and others. The songs are simply superb,refreshing-typical ARR.But the surprising thing is that there are 10 songs but not one features Shankar Mahadevan,Hariharan,Udit Narayan,Sadhana Sargam,Sukhwinder singh...Well Rehman himself has rendered his voice to 5 songs. The one featuring him and the great Lata Mangeshkar (Lukka chuppi) is superb. Its a must have for Rehman fans.

Sivakasi na Standard!

Sivakasi na Standard!Well this is the caption one will see in most parts of Madras and get to listen in the FM radio. As a kid most of us got the impression that Diwali crackers have the same logo "STANDARD".Since it has been- the brand. And Our own Ilaya Dhalapathi is making use of this by having a brand placement in his forthcoming(hit :-))"Sivakaasi.
To some extent this sounds correct as well coz,
*Vijay films have some standard.("can watch em once"-This phrase again needs some justification{oru thadava paakalam})
*They have standard music (some times sub standard)
*They have standard stunts.(Good stunts rather)
*They have standard formula tricks-Kuthu paatu,punch dialogues,item numbers.:-P
*They have standard masala storyline.:-P

So i think it is a nice try.

Nice Forward...[ Katrathum petrathum]

Glorifying CAP (Cut and paste)Technology

Joke of the day

Read it somewhere just sharing it..

A millionaire kept live alligators in the pool behind his mansion. He had a beautiful unmarried daughter, and decided to throw a huge party for potential suitors. During the party he announced, "I will give one million dollars or my daughter's hand in marriage to the man who can swim across this pool full of alligators."
As he finished speaking, there was the sound of a large SPLASH! There was a man in the pool swimming with all his might, with the crowd cheering him on. Finally, he made it to the other side unharmed.
The millionaire was impressed. "My boy that was incredible! Fantastic! I didn't think it could be done! I will now keep my bargain. Do you want my daughter's hand in marriage or the one million dollars?"
The man said, "Listen, I don't want your money. And I don't want to marry your daughter. I want the person who pushed me into the water!"

Yahoo ! Site Explorer

Yahoo has come up with another interesting search called the site explorer. This search helps one access all the pages of a website that is indexed by yahoo search. The Yahoo! search database contains detailed information about the structure of the web. In addition to the web pages themselves, the database stores information about links among pages, and uses that information (as well as additional algorithms) to gauge the popularity of a given page.

Email rumours

Rumours spread fast these days thanks to email. One recent email forward about the person above stating that she was the Bar dancer arrested recently in the match fixing allegation. There was a mail saying that she was related to a Politician.
Bu today in Aaj Tak channel there was an interview with this person which said that she is Tamanna Bhatia an upcoming actress in Bollywood who also has featured in a music video along with the Indian Idol Abhijeet Sawant.Probably this may boost her popularity and she might land in a good movie project.

Sania Mirza On par with Rahul Dravid

India teen tennis sensation Sania Mirza is on par with The Wall of Indian cricket Rahul Dravid in what ??
Well they both earn approximately 1.5 crores of rupees per annum through endorsements.
Sania's ad revenue has risen by a whopping 30% which is understandable given the fact she had a meteoric rise to rank 40 from somewhere in the 200s in less than a year. But being on par with Dravid who has been a cricket star for few years now in India where cricket is a religion, may raise a few eyebrows. But probably the fact that Sania is now a global lady sport star from India and the primary spenders in India are women her case stands justified.

Well Looks like England captain Michael Vaughan is gonna lift this trophy after the final test at Oval. But the aussie captain Ricky Ponting may have other ideas.
Well this has been one of the rivetting series so far and i feel it should be fitting enough that the English win this ashes series.

Trisha,Sneha-have become beautiful moms

Yeah its true. But if u were wondering how these ladies who never cross their teens in the movies(they are young though) turned mothers overnight.Well in the ad world they are the beautiful moms now.Trisha(she has been there for sometime) is the Horlicks mom whereas Sneha is the latest mom in ITC biscuits and a popular atta brand.Well when one gets paid more than what you get for a full movie why not ?.

20 :20 cricket in India

20 : 20 cricket which is such a huge hit in England made its first appearence here in India this weekend.Six teams- i each from the cricket associations from Karnataka and bengal,Chemplast from chennai,a team from New south wales,Air-India,a world XI contested for the cup.World XI had the likes of Dhoni, srinath, sami and Dean jones. There were few stars but predominantly youngsters who want to make it big for india were there.Man of the series Suresh Raina and Indian test wicketkeeper Dinesh kaarthick performed well.
For the CAS stricken chennaite like me any kind of live cricket is now ok and if its good enough then what else..

News Channels and sms..

In India these days the hottest business in Media are the news channels.Topping the list is Prannoy Roy's NDTV and closedly followed by the India Today group's AAJ TAK and Headlines today. There are some 7 popular news channels and one thing u find common in them is the interaction with the viewers through sms-Short Messaging Service. They use sms for several purposes such as voting, viewer feedback, latest news n scores etc.Off late one use of sms by these channels is worth mention.Telecasting messages from People who need to contact their family/friends but unable to do so on their scrolling newsbar. And India being hit by natural disasters more often nowadays say the Tsunami or these Mumbai rains this system is being put to use.But whether this service is effectively used and is helpful to people or not is not known. But i doubt its effectiveness coz both parties(the sender and the intended recepient) have to watch that particular news channel to know the news.Neways ,if it helps then fine.

Go Aussie Go

Australia continued their supremacy on the Ashes with a fantastic 239 run win over the arch rivals -poms.Pietersen stood tall among the ruins but again that was kinda expected with the form hes in and the capitulation of the rest of the team was expected as well considering the professionalism that this aussie team is known for.
India should learn from this aussie team ,how to win from advantageous positions.Greg Chappell the man in charge should be well versed in this and should in turn inculcate it into the men in blue.Hope things get better for India in the tri series in Sri lanka where a pathetic series is underway.windies with not even a'A' side struggling under the hands of murali.Well cant help it.Hope India puts up a better performance in the forthcoming tri series.

Sahara -English masala flick

No logic - sheer fun-this is what the movie "Sahara" is all about. The actors Matthew McConaughey, Penelope cruz and Steve Zahn have done their job fine. There are a few missing links here and there.who cares just two hours of adventure guranteed. The cinematography showcasing the Sahara desert and the Niger river is great. The Stunts are also good and the boat stunt(Panama) in particular was good.

The Aussies Just took a small break

The Aussies are back and in style led by none other than the brilliant "Gilly".he struck a swash buckling century and they reached home with 15 overs to spare.Though deprived of cricket action at the CAS stricken Chennai i still follow it in newspaper and the net.Waiting for the launch of the TATA -STAR TV direct to home venture "T-Sky".Hopefully it is a good offer for the audience.

How is this Ashes gonna be ?

In the last Natwest tri series match there was a war of words between Matt hayden, simon jones, collingwood and vaughan and kinda amicably resolved by Ponting and the two umpires.Well going by these kinda incidents one can say the passions are running high in this new look English team and they are gonna give the aussies a run for their money this time around.well if that happens then this Ashes edition is gonna be a treat for cricket lovers.

Awesome Anniyan.

Anniyan @ Satyam cinemas(chennai) -->wonderful experience.
Lot of reviews float in the net abt this movie and what i have here is my view.
The storyline shows some similarity to Shankar's previous movies Indian and gentleman.well all his heroes have been crime fighters and cant help them being similar.
well positives first.
:) Vikram- a class act.Be it the simple "rules Ramanujam" or the lover ramp model "remo" or the killer Anniyan (with the style of "undertaker" ) he is just fantastic. The scenes with Sadha in the room of "temple towers" where he switches between Remo and Anniyan and the scene with Praksahraj where he in a single shot depicts both "ambi" and "anniyan" are just too good.He scores in Comedy in the scenes in the train and then when he writes his love letter to mention a few.

:) Vivek- man whenever he comes on the screen the theatre erupts to a laughter.he is just too good in his timing and only he can bring this effect. The jokes where he drags kamalHassan, vairamuthu are just a couple of instances of his superb comedy.

:) Cinematography-Ravi varman and Manikandan have done a brilliant job .The fight sequences and the songs deserve special mention. The "tulip gardens " in the Kumari song are a visual treat.Andankaaka song, wherein u find a whole village panited colourfully (including a big bridge)is awesome.

:) Music-Harris jayaraj has did a pretty good job in the background score and the songs are all pretty good though many felt the absence of ARR.

:) Shankar-for obvious reasons.

Sadha and prakashraj also deserve special mention as they have stuck to their job.
someone may say whether it is sadha or 'Sodha' .well she looks pretty good. And thats half the job done.and she doesnt overact or do any blunders anywhere.
Prakashraj as the police officer is as usual good.nothing very particular about his role. The minuses..

:( Sadha doesnt even get the slighest of doubts about the similarity between remo and ambi.

:( First half is dragged a bit explaining about the irresponsible public.Even in the theatre during the intermission i saw ppl smoking in a no-smoking zone.

:( Storyline somewhat similar to sidney sheldon's Tell me your dreams.

Overall its a fine movie and will be one of the biggest Tamil Superhits of all time.

Ashes

The Ashes -the traditional urn -the series .Its back in England this summer and there are a lot of English fans hoping for a turnaround after 25 years. Will Vaughan and his team make it.Well going by their performance in the last 15 months or so, there is something positive in this team and has the capability to beat the world beaters Australia.Well the aussies are not invincible but the fact is they up their performance levels whenever it matters. Before the ashes is the ODI triangular series with Banladesh as the third team.
England's trump cards Peitersen and Flintoff are fit and raring to go .so this shud be exciting.

Tsunami relief match

Yesterday there was a tsunami relief match held at the Lords featuring MCC eleven and the World eleven.Thought Saurav wud click after his blistering century in the county match. But he dint click.Neways the MCC IX won the match.
The indian batters dint do that well sehwag out for just 5.but the Indian spin duo Kumble and Harbhajan bagged 3 wickets each.Thats pretty kewl.
But the real spirit was fundraiser for Tsunami relief and it was realised.

Eventful day in cricket(yesterday)

South Africa literally shocked West Indies or rather Langdevelt shocked the Windies by pulling off a sensational hat trick at the death ,in the 3rd ODI in SA Vs WI series.Man - last 4 balls 2 runs and u loose all ur 3 wickets in three balls. That doesnt happen often.Me reminded of the Miandad's last ball six against India.

Shane warne scored his first ever First class century in 72 balls against kent.Shane warne is great bowler alright and he was a pretty effective batsmen as well .Happy that hez got his 1st 100 which took some time coming.

Anniyan music rocks (did i say that)

well after listening to the numbers from Anniyan-the most hyped and awaited tamil movie now-i wasnt too impressed .The music by Harris Jayaraj who has given tremendous hits like "Minnale" doesnt seem to have done that xtra bit to get the best.Shankar whose movies right from his debut film Gentleman to his last movie Boys ,in which music was given prime importance and were all chartbusters.Reason---"A R Rahman".First time shankar works without ARR and the difference is felt.BUt i dont say that the music is bad .Its still good but not good enuf. The slow numbers Aiyangaru veetu and kumari are good .Shankar Mahadevan's rendition in the second song is brilliant. The fast numbers resemble some western songs and thats it.Well shankar spends lavishly on the picturization of his songs and hope that it makes up for the not so great music.

Bye Bye Mr Wright

John Wright got it all wrong in his last series ,the just concluded ODI series against Pakistan.Well cant blame him altogether coz that bad was the batting display of our batsmen and hap hazard bowling of our bowlers.Among the batsmen barring Sehwag,Dravid Dhoni and to some extent kaif the rest were really pathetic .The ones i mentioned too failed when it mattered.Well The Indian team did well in last few years but in patches John wright success % was 40 in tests and 54 in ODI top of the charts among all other previous indian coaches.Well now the question is whoz the next coach???The options i think ,going thru the information sources that i know, are Greg Chappell,Tom Moody and Dave whatmore and a remote chance of steve waugh(i personally don think so). There mite be another candidate in the the legendary Alan Border whos now no more an Aussie selector .Well whoever be the coach to c India win in the future there should be positive changes in the team selection, investment in all levels of domestic cricket and improvement of the facilities in our domestic circuit.Hope for the best :).

Deccan chronicle ( 4th largest selling English daily in India) which is primarily based in Andhra n Karnataka has launched its Chennai edition recently and at just a Rupee cost .They wanna get a share of the market somehow which is basically dominated by The Hindu(Re 3.25 daily Re 4 in the weekends ) and to some extent by The New Indian express(Re 1.50).Whether it succeeds in doing so is there to be seen.Well i had read it in Hyderabad; had its own masala stuff and doing the same here. but u get a newspaper at Re 1.it might work.

Yahoo 360 Invites

Some Yahoo 360 Invites there for the taking .whoever needs one post comments .

Saurav -Bashing continues

These every Magazine carries an article about Saurav Gangulys poor form and jokes abt it .Heres one more of the Saurav Bashing ..

The following are some of the ideas for Ganguly to regain form and stay in the middle for a longer duration.(subject to approval by I.C.C)

IDEA NO:1: Plastic Ball or Tennis Ball or Rubber Ball to be used while bowling to Ganguly.

IDEA NO:2: Only one stick should be kept while Ganguly is Batting instead of Three so that his chances of getting out bowled will be minimised

IDEA NO:3: Dada can wrap up his legs with 4 or 5 bats instead of pads, so that there is no chance of getting out lbw.

IDEA NO:4: The size of the ball can be reduced to the size of a lemon or size of his bat can be increased to twice its size. Or the size of the ground can be decreased to that of a Basketball Ground.

IDEA NO:5: Fast Bowlers are prohibited to bowl the following deliveries to Dada.
They should not bowl Inswinger,Outswinger,Off cutter, Leg cutter,Bouncer,Short Pitched Ball, Reverse swinging ball, yorker, reverse swinging yorker, slower ball and most importantly in and around the off stump corridor.

IDEA NO:6: Slow Bowlers are prohibited from bowling off spin, leg spin, doosra, googly, china man, flipper, faster ball.

IDEA NO:7: Speed restrictions for bowlers:
FAST BOWLERS: MAX 120 KMPH
SLOW BOWLERS: MAX 50 KMPH.

IDEA NO:8 Fast bowlers in their runup should run like Mohinder Amarnath and slow bowlers should not run at all.

IDEA NO:9 Ganguly can change his position as medium fast bowler instead of Batsman and bat at no:11, so that by the time he enters the ground 48 or 49 overs would have been bowled.

IDEA NO:10: I.C.C Should warn Pakistan Bowlers that hereafter any bowler taking Dada's wicket, the number will not be added to the bowler's tally of wickets.

IDEA NO:11: Bowlers should not appeal for dismissal of Ganguly. Even a small appeal (not necessarily loud appealing or excessive appealing) will lead to match refereee Chris Broad suspending the bowler for the rest of the series.

IDEA NO:12: Fast Bowlers should only throw the ball and slow bowlers should use underarm throw.

IDEA NO:13: Even after this if Ganguly gets out, the bowler will be called a chucker and new rule for bowling action, i.e.( 2 degrees bending of bowling arm allowed for fast bowlers and 3 degrees bending of bowling arm for slow bowlers) will be taken into account and the bowler will be immediately sent to Australia by next flight for corrective action.

IDEA NO:14: No fielder should catch the ball hit by Dada. If they catch, then any of the opening batsman who got out earlier, like virender shewag will be allowed to bat for second time.

IDEA NO: 15: For every minute Dada stays in the middle, one run will be added to his score and if the ball hits the bat and travels to the following places, runs will be credited to Dada as follows.
Slip,Gully,Forward Short Leg: 1 run
Mid on,mid off, cover,point: 2 runs
long on,long off,fine leg,third man: 3 runs.

and finally if Dada's wicket is taken before he reaches 50 runs all pakis will be fined 50% of their match fees.

The Year 2038 Problem--Interesting

The Year 2038 Problem

What is it?

Starting at GMT 03:14:07, Tuesday, January 19, 2038, It is expected to see lots of systems around the world breaking magnificently: satellites falling out of orbit, massive power outages (like the 2003 North American blackout), hospital life support system failures, phone system interruptions, banking errors, etc. One second after this critical second, many of these systems will have wildly inaccurate date settings, producing all kinds of unpredictable consequences. In short, many of the dire predictions for the year 2000 are much more likely to actually occur in the year 2038! Consider the year 2000 just a dry run. In case you think we can sit on this issue for another 30 years before addressing it, consider that reports of temporal echoes of the 2038 problem are already starting to appear in future date calculations for mortgages and vital statistics!

In the first month of the year 2038 C.E. many computers will encounter a date-related bug in their operating systems and/or in the applications they run. This can result in incorrect and wildly inaccurate dates being reported by the operating system and/or applications. The effect of this bug is hard to predict, because many applications are not prepared for the resulting "skip" in reported time - anywhere from 1901 to a "broken record" repeat of the reported time at the second the bug occurs. Also, may make some small adjustment to the actual time the bug expresses itself. This bug to cause serious problems on many platforms, especially Unix and Unix-like platforms, because these systems will "run out of time".

What causes it?

Time_t is a data type used by C and C++ programs to represent dates and times internally. (Windows programmers out there might also recognize it as the basis for the CTime and CTimeSpan classes in MFC.) time_t is actually just an integer, a whole number, that counts the number of seconds since January 1, 1970 at 12:00 AM Greenwich Mean Time. A time_t value of 0 would be 12:00:00 AM (exactly midnight) 1-Jan-1970, a time_t value of 1 would be 12:00:01 AM (one second after midnight) 1-Jan-1970, etc..

some example times and their exact time_t representations:

Date & time time_t representation

1-Jan-1970, 12:00:00 AM GMT ---- 0

1-Jan-1970, 12:01:00 AM GMT ---- 60

1-Jan-1970, 01:00:00 AM GMT ---- 3 600

2-Jan-1970, 12:00:00 AM GMT ---- 86 400

1-Jan-1971, 12:00:00 AM GMT ---- 31 536 000

1-Jan-1972, 12:00:00 AM GMT ---- 63 072 000

1-Jan-2038, 12:00:00 AM GMT ---- 2 145 916 800

19-Jan-2038,03:14:07 AM GMT ---- 2 147 483 647

By the year 2038, the time_t representation for the current time will be over 2 140 000 000. And that's the problem. A modern 32-bit computer stores a "signed integer" data type, such as time_t, in 32 bits. The first of these bits is used for the positive/negative sign of the integer, while the remaining 31 bits are used to store the number itself. The highest number these 31 data bits can store works out to exactly 2 147 483 647. A time_t value of this exact number, 2 147 483 647, represents January 19, 2038, at 7 seconds past 3:14 AM Greenwich Mean Time. So, at 3:14:07 AM GMT on that fateful day, every time_t used in a 32-bit C or C++ program will reach its upper limit.

One second later, on 19-January-2038 at 3:14:08 AM GMT, disaster strikes.

When a signed integer reaches its maximum value and then gets incremented, it wraps around to its lowest possible negative value. This means a 32-bit signed integer, such as a time_t, set to its maximum value of 2 147 483 647 and then incremented by 1, will become -2 147 483 648. Note that "-" sign at the beginning of this large number. A time_t value of -2 147 483 648 would represent December 13, 1901 at 8:45:52 PM GMT.

So, if all goes normally, 19-January-2038 will suddenly become 13-December-1901 in every time_t across the globe, and every date calculation based on this figure will go haywire. And it gets worse. Most of the support functions that use the time_t data type cannot handle negative time_t values at all. They simply fail and return an error code.

A quick check with the following Perl script may help determine if your computers will have problems (this requires Perl to be installed on your system, of course):

#!/usr/bin/perl
# Use POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface)
use POSIX;
# Set the Time Zone to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) for date calculations.
$ENV{'TZ'} = "GMT";
# Count up in seconds of Epoch time just before and after the critical event.

for ($clock = 2147483641; $clock < 2147483651; $clock++)
{
print ctime($clock);
}

For example, the output of this script on Debian GNU/Linux (kernel 2.4.22) (An affected system) will be

# ./2038.pl
Tue Jan 19 03:14:01 2038
Tue Jan 19 03:14:02 2038
Tue Jan 19 03:14:03 2038
Tue Jan 19 03:14:04 2038
Tue Jan 19 03:14:05 2038
Tue Jan 19 03:14:06 2038
Tue Jan 19 03:14:07 2038
Fri Dec 13 20:45:52 1901
Fri Dec 13 20:45:52 1901
Fri Dec 13 20:45:52 1901

Solution

"The best way to predict the future is to engineer it." Consider testing your mission-critical code well ahead of time on a non-production test platform set just before the critical date. For more general applications, just using large types for storing dates will do the trick in most cases. For example, in GNU C, 64-bits (a "long " type) is sufficient to keep the time from rolling over for literally geological eons This just means any executables the operating systems runs will always get the correct time reported to them when queried in the correct manner. It doesn't stop the executables you may still want to be worried about

Well-written programs can simply be recompiled with a new version of the library that uses, for example, 8-byte values for the storage format. This is possible because the library encapsulates the whole time activity with its own time types and functions (unlike most mainframe programs, which did not standardize their date formats or calculations). So the Year 2038 problem should not be nearly as hard to fix as the Y2K problem was.

Admittedly, some don't feel that this impending disaster will strike too many people. They reason that, by the time 2038 rolls around, most programs will be running on 64-bit or even 128-bit computers. In a 64-bit program, a time_t could represent any date and time in the future out to 292 000 000 000 A.D., which is about 20 times the currently estimated age of the universe. The problem with this kind of optimism is the same root problem behind most of the Year 2000 concerns that plagued the software industry in previous years: Legacy Code. Even if every PC in the year 2038 has a 64-bit CPU, there will be a lot of older 32-bit programs running on them

The greatest danger with the Year 2038 Problem is its invisibility. The more-famous Year 2000 is a big, round number; it only takes a few seconds of thought, even for a computer-illiterate person, to imagine what might happen when 1999 turns into 2000. But January 19, 2038 is not nearly as obvious. Software companies will probably not think of trying out a Year 2038 scenario before doomsday strikes. Of course, there will be some warning ahead of time. Scheduling software, billing programs, personal reminder calendars, and other such pieces of code that set dates in the near future will fail as soon as one of their target dates exceeds 19-Jan-2038, assuming a time_t is used to store them.

Good luck, and hope no ones flying car breaks down in 2038

TheCute Little Yahoo!

A Romanian couple decided to prove how much they hate their own child by naming him "Yahoo". Reuters reports that a three-day old bully has already given him an "Indian burn".

Obviously that bit about the bully is just my joke, although you can bet it will be true in about 6-10 years. The Romanian couple has decided to name their son after a freakin' search engine because they met over the Internet.

Daily Libertatea said on Thursday Cornelia and Nonu Dragoman, both from Transylvania, met and decided they were meant for each other following a three-month relationship over the net.

World's Smallest 3 CCD Camcorder

Is the Matsushita/Panasonic Digicam NV-GS150 the world's smallest 3 CCD digital camcorder? The new handheld was shown off yesterday in Japan, highlighting its 2.32-megapixel sensor—pretty good for a video recorder, especially one just 123mm long. And the price isn't half bad either: just $777.

Also, if you're hip to the camcorder scene, you should check out CamcorderInfo's CES coverage, where they basically catalog every single bit of information that was released, even if they had to choke it out of the vendors.
